These shoji lights are based on the traditional Japanese screens that are used to provide privacy while allowing light to pass though. The idea is to use a softly glowing light source to brighten up dark interior spaces with a a peaceful, diffuse light. This is a nice alternative to the blazing electric glow provided by more traditional light sources.

These tables are designed to do more than just sit there and act like a traditional piece of furniture. Although these look like tables, their main function is to light the room. We love the soft lighting that they give to our bedroom and the light is very unobtrusive if one has to turn a light on when the other is sleeping. We also like the height of these particular nightstands, since our bed has the taller boxspring and mattress. Only disappointments (but, we were looking for inexpensive) is that the wood is not really an "oak" look (there isn't any woodgrain) and the top isn't all that big -- you can only fit a small clock radio and, say, a tissue box, but all-in-all, we're happy with our purchase (because we were looking for inexpensive nightstands).
